Weed wacker used for brush clearance sparks dangerous Portola Fire in Benedict Canyon

On Tuesday, June 12, 2016, a fire in Benedict Canyon was sparked by a weed wacker while clearing brush.  

Evacuations were ordered impacting 86 homes.  The fire burned approximately 35 to 40 acres.  There were two minor firefighter injuries; one with heat exhaustion and one with a minor burns.  There were over 250 firefighters battling the blaze in the difficult terrain.  

Multiple City and County fire stations responded as well as the City of Beverly Hills Fire Department, Culver City Fire Department and Santa Monica Fire Department.  Water drops were required.  Firefighters spent several days checking for hot spots before the all clear.
