State Legislative News: The Nine Bad Bills ACTION needed for SB 1120 & SB 725 - and Rodenticide Ban (AB 1788)
Why is action needed on SB 1120 and SB 725?
SB 1120 is rushing toward the Assembly floor, possibly Tuesday. It crushes single-family streets and directly attacks homeownership by ending single-family zoning everywhere.
A yes on 1120 will allow:
One single-family house to be replaced by 4 to 8 rental units.
10-unit apartments built anywhere in our single-family neighborhoods.
Minimal or no parking requirements.
Minimal 4-foot setbacks from side and rear neighbors. (So, big unregulated apartments look right into your house and yard!)
Old trees unprotected because no environmental reviews required.
No infrastructure improvements to sewers, water, police, fire, or schools.
No community say on where housing is added.
No off-site improvements like new curbs, storm drains, gutters, and sidewalks.
All this in our single-family neighborhoods!
These bills are a sham and simply reward developers who aren’t required to add any affordable housing.
Our communities will all be devastated!
No community will be exempt: not gated, not hillside, not even vulnerable communities like South LA!
ALERT sent out by Livable California, who has been tracking how these bills are being shuffled through committees with no transparency:
Sunday after 1 pm, the state Assembly will vote on the Worst Bill, SB 1120.
Tomorrow, after 10 am, the Senate is set to vote on AB 725, the Second-Worst Bill.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Ask Assembly members Mike Gipson and Reggie Jones-Sawyer to defend their working-class homeowners and home-buyer hopefuls by killing SB 1120. Their heavily Black and Latino households will be badly harmed by SB 1120.
If you live or have family in Gipson's district (Compton, Carson, Long Beach, Watts, Wilmington) or Jones-Sawyer's district (Florence, Huntington Park, Historic South Central, Vermont-Slauson) CALL NOW!
Gipson: (916) 319 2064
Jones-Sawyer (916) 319 2059.
KEEP CALLING. Spread the word to local folks you know!
For NorCal folks, time to get answers from Kansen Chu of San Jose! He's been evasive, he's running for a new office. CALL NOW! Kansen Chu (916) 319-2025.
Thank you Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, the latest lawmaker to OPPOSE SB 1120!
Thank you Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager, who DESTROYS in this video, calling SB 1120 a direct attack on Black homeownership: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
Despite spin by its author, senate boss Toni Atkins, who is married to a developer, SB 1120 lets investors buy homes, destroy them and build 4 luxury homes with no yard or garage. On your street. In your hard-won community.
NOT modest duplexes. Four luxury rental homes squeezing out local homeownership.
This gold-plated gift is the PLAN from the Senate? During a recession and COVID-19? It's a disgrace.
IT'S VERY TIGHT TIMING EVERYONE!
The legal deadline to approve laws is Aug. 31.
The Senate will hear AB 725, the cousin to SB 1120, after 10 am tomorrow, Saturday.
The Assembly will hear SB 1120, the community-crushing bill, after 1 pm Sunday.

CLAW asks for your support on AB 1788
Please support the ban on Anticoagulant Rodenticide poisons. In the news recently, a mountain lion and a bobcat deaths were the result of rodenticide. For more information, visit the CLAW (Citizens for Los Angeles Wildlife) website by linking here.
