Councilmember Paul Koretz: Time running out to respond to 2020 Census - deadline September 30th

September 30th Is The Last Day to Respond to 
the 2020 Census. 
There Are Less Than 20 Days Left!

The 2020 Census, a regional tally of the population of the United States, will determine how congressional seats are apportioned as well as how federal dollars are distributed to state and local governments for education, healthcare, housing, and social safety net programs for the next 10 years. Unfortunately, between the Coronavirus pandemic and political propaganda about who will be counted, there has been a surprisingly low response rate across the country. Low response rates appear to be the trend among many of our neighborhoods across the 5th District, as well, with some reporting less than a 50% response rate as shown on this interactive map. This could have devastating long term impacts on our community. 

Time is running out and there is no time like the present to make sure your census household information is submitted! The survey only takes a few minutes to complete and can be accessed by clicking on this link, or you may visit https://2020census.gov/en.html.

If you respond online or by phone today, a census taker is less likely to have to visit your home to collect your response. Census takers are hired from your area and their goal is to help you and everyone in your household to be counted in the 2020 Census. If someone visits your home this year to collect information, check to make sure they have a valid ID badge, which should have their name, their photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date. Census workers may also carry bags and other equipment such as tablets bearing the Census Bureau logo. Census takers will be wearing masks and following local public health guidelines when they visit your home. 

Census takers work between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., including weekends. If no one is home when the census taker visits, they will leave a notice of their visit with information about how to respond online, by phone or by mail. Again, if you provide your own census information online, a census worker shouldn't need to come to your home.
