BELLA           ID# A2055312

URGENT: Medical Alert

This very sweet, 12-year-old, 50 lb senior girl was surrendered to the East Valley city animal shelter in this shocking, emaciated condition, and blood work shows her to have diabetes. The West LA shelter volunteers are urgently trying to help find her the loving home she needs, since Bella has been put on medical alert.

There was a time when a dog like this wouldn’t have lasted a day in the shelter before some wonderful rescue group scooped her up, got her into a foster home, and started immediate treatment. Today, like the city shelters, the rescue groups are full and overwhelmed, and fosters are few and far between.

The volunteers can't bear to think of this poor old girl dying in the shelter, especially when it appears she's known very little compassion in her life. Bella needs to get out of the shelter and into a home urgently — with a rescue, adopter, or foster — because she needs to have her diabetes regulated with insulin. She will need to be seen by a private veterinarian. Bella has a good appetite, and has no ketones in her urine currently.

Please share Bella’s story and help find her an adopter or foster home. If you're able to help Bella or would like more information, please contact Lucy at 213- 655-7613.

FONZIE         ID# A2057031

If you’re looking for an extremely affectionate, easy-to-handle cuddle bug, meet FONZIE!

This ridiculously sweet bulldog has become a shelter staff and volunteer favorite in record time because he’s just pure love! His favorite place in the world is being near his people and getting all the TLC they're willing to give.

Fonzie, who came into the West LA shelter as a stray on 10/21, is approximately 4 years old and a compact 56 lbs. It doesn’t appear this low-rider has been taught basic commands yet, but he walks well on a leash and is friendly and outgoing to everyone he meets.

The volunteers get to meet and care for so many amazing dogs at the shelter, but they promise this little fella is extra special. Please come meet him, and you’ll quickly fall head over heels as they have!

SPARKS        ID# A2056287

URGENT: SPARKS MUST EXIT BY NOV 17 OR SOONER IF CONDITION DECLINES

3-yr-old, 82 lb neutered male

Sparks is a gorgeous German shepherd who was brought to the shelter on October 14. He has a microchip, but no one has come to get him.

Like so many shelter animals, Sparks was terrified in his new stressful environment and barked and growled when strangers stood at his kennel door. A few volunteers kept visiting him -- talking in gentle tones and giving treats -- until finally he felt safe. And after about two weeks, he welcomed their presence with body wiggles and tail wags.

Sparks has since opened up to reveal his sweet nature, and he melts everyone’s hearts with his soulful brown eyes and big, open-mouthed smiles.

Overall, Sparks walks well on leash, knows “sit” and “shake,” and is EXTREMELY affectionate.  He loves to calmly sit or lie by your side for lots of petting and TLC. The volunteers are working with him, and say he’s super-smart and eager to please.

This beautiful fella is way too young to have his life cut short at the shelter for some medical issues that seem resolvable. Unfortunately, treatment at the shelters is limited. (He’s had some diarrhea, vomiting, and an upper respiratory infection.) Please share Sparks’s post and help him get adopted or rescued before it’s too late.

Rescue Partners:  Please contact Lifesaving Liaison Haydee Mancera at haydee.mancera@lacity.org  or (213) 305-4112. In her absence, contact Shelter Supervisors at (310) 207-3156 or Veronica Perry at veronica.perry@lacity.org or (213) 435-9152.

Volunteers make special request for Amazon Wishlist donations

The West LA animal shelter volunteers are running very low on some supplies. They’re making a special request this week for donations from their Amazon Wishlist (link below).

• For dogs: High on the priority list are treats and bully sticks. They go through treats quickly at the shelter, and since most of the pups only get out of their kennels once or twice a week, bully sticks are wonderful boredom-busters and stress-relievers.

• For cats: The cat volunteers regularly go through a lot of wet food for both adults and kittens, so they’re always in need of replenishment.

• For small animals: Top requests from the small animal volunteers include pellets, treats, playpens, wheels, Vitamin C tablets, hay, and other bedding for their many hamsters, mice, bunnies, gerbils, and guinea pigs.

On behalf of all of their furry friends at the shelter, the volunteers deeply appreciate your generosity!
