Poor little Merick (female, 10 lbs) and Ithaca (male, 12 lbs) came into the shelter as strays on November 5 in terrible condition. Both had filthy, matted coats, a heavy flea infestation, missing hair, red patchy areas, and were subsequently diagnosed with sarcoptic mange.
Because sarcoptic mange is a zoonotic disease (contagious to both humans and other animals), they’ve been kept in the shelter’s medical kennels and not yet allowed to interact with volunteers or spend time outside. But both these beautiful little dogs are incredibly sweet and just wiggle with delight when anyone visits their kennel door. It’s clear they love people and are craving human contact and TLC!
These two sweeties have been given a medical alert and need to get out of the shelter as soon as possible, and receive some further vet attention. While they continue on the road to recovery from the mange, Merick has an eye issue that needs to be looked at (as can be seen in the photos).
But thanks to the shelter medical staff, both pups have already come a long way and look vastly better than when they first arrived! The groomers also gave them a much-needed bath and shave, and now it’s much easier to see just how adorable they really are. Both these lovely little dogs are available for adoption or rescue. Please share their story so they can find a more suitable place to continue healing — or find their forever homes!
Note that Merick and Ithaca are not listed as a bonded pair, but are currently sharing a kennel and are very happy together!
If you have a home for one or both of these gorgeous little dogs, and would enjoy the reward of seeing them regain their full health and beauty, please call or visit the shelter (details above). For further information, you may also contact the shelter’s lifesaving coordinator, Haydee Mancera, on (213) 305-4112.
SPARKS ID# A2056287
Update: SPARKS was scheduled to be euthanized November 17 but was granted a reprieve due to improving health.
SPARKS still needs to be adopted!
3-yr-old, 82 lb neutered male
Sparks is a gorgeous German shepherd who was brought to the shelter on October 14. He has a microchip, but no one has come to get him.
Like so many shelter animals, Sparks was terrified in his new stressful environment and barked and growled when strangers stood at his kennel door. A few volunteers kept visiting him -- talking in gentle tones and giving treats -- until finally he felt safe. And after about two weeks, he welcomed their presence with body wiggles and tail wags.
Sparks has since opened up to reveal his sweet nature, and he melts everyone’s hearts with his soulful brown eyes and big, open-mouthed smiles.
Overall, Sparks walks well on leash, knows “sit” and “shake,” and is EXTREMELY affectionate. He loves to calmly sit or lie by your side for lots of petting and TLC. The volunteers are working with him, and say he’s super-smart and eager to please.
CREAMSICLE ID# A2038030
Hi, there! My name’s Creamsicle — for obvious reasons! I’m a neutered male, and I weigh 9.8 lbs. A Ginger with green eyes and a light dusting of freckles on the nose is hard to beat, if I do say so myself! Please come find me at the shelter, and bring me home with you. I’m waiting for you! Love, Creamsicle xox
Update: BELLA, the diabetic senior girl featured last week, who was surrendered to the East Valley shelter in shocking condition, has been RESCUED from the shelter by Golden Years Dog Sanctuary. If you'd like to donate to support this rescue group and their work saving senior dogs, you can do so here: https://goldenyearsdogsanctuary.com.
Volunteers make special request for Amazon Wishlist donations
The West LA animal shelter volunteers are running very low on some supplies. They’re making a special request this week for donations from their Amazon Wishlist (link below).
• For dogs: High on the priority list are treats and bully sticks. They go through treats quickly at the shelter, and since most of the pups only get out of their kennels once or twice a week, bully sticks are wonderful boredom-busters and stress-relievers.
• For cats: The cat volunteers regularly go through a lot of wet food for both adults and kittens, so they’re always in need of replenishment.
• For small animals: Top requests from the small animal volunteers include pellets, treats, playpens, wheels, Vitamin C tablets, hay, and other bedding for their many hamsters, mice, bunnies, gerbils, and guinea pigs.
On behalf of all of their furry friends at the shelter, the volunteers deeply appreciate your generosity!
