Fire Insurance: Wheels in Motion to Require Insurance Discounts for Property Owners in Wildfire Risk Areas

Insurance companies doing business in California are required to give discounts to our homeowners to protect their properties from brushfires.

The California Department of Insurance announced the new rules Monday, October 17, 2022. Officials say there has been skyrocketing insurance costs for residents in areas that are prone to brushfires. Consumers have demanded for years that they get discounts to protect their homes by installing fire resistant roofs and clearing away vegetation.

Insurance companies have six months to submit paperwork to the State. Insurance companies must also provide homeowners with their property's wildfire risk score and create a right to appeal that score.
