Saturday! New Santa Monica City Councilmember's De la Torre, Parra & Brock Discuss "Getting Your City Back" 10 AM

Reprint from LIVABLE CALIFORNIA

Livable California is a non-profit statewide group of community leaders, activists and local elected officials. We believe in local answers to the housing affordability crisis. Our robust fight requires trips to Sacramento & a lobbyist going toe-to-toe with power.

Three Santa Monica City Council candidates, in a historic November upset against luxury housing developers, won with just shoestring campaign budgets.

The three have diverse backgrounds, don't answer to developers, and plan to shake up Santa Monica's years of overbuilding luxury housing, producing sky-high costs, severe traffic and crowding.

On Saturday Jan. 23 at 10 a.m., we’ll discuss with these 3 impressive winners:

Overreach from Sacramento, led by Bay Area legislator Scott Wiener and others

- The two worst bills of 2021 that must be killed, SB 9 (formerly SB 1120) and SB 10 (formerly SB 902)

- How to push back in the war against neighborhoods

Let’s end Scott Wiener’s divisive war through positive figures like De la Torre, Parra and Brock.

Let’s find good bills we support, like SB 1299 – now renamed SB 15 (Portantino). SB 1299 was the best bill of 2020, rewarding cities to voluntarily rezone their idled commercial spaces to allow housing. See that boldface, folks? Reward and voluntarily

Also on Saturday:

Discuss Gov. Newsom’s extremely unusual proposed $4.3M budget item to form watchdog teams who attend and monitor city council, county supervisor and planning commission meetings, seemingly to enforce the state’s agenda on land-use. In a feisty comment at his Jan. 8 budget press conference, Newsom said: “We’re not going to wait for an article to be written to be proactive in terms of holding local government accountable to increasing housing production.”

Here at Livable California, we are small fry, fighting huge financial and political forces. Please DONATE HERE to Livable California today. We thank you for keeping us going!

See you Saturday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. Meanwhile, please DONATE and have a great Thursday and Friday!
